CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4 - ONGOING ASSESSMENT

I think good assessments are very important tools in a school setting. It lets the teacher know what the students actually did and did not learn and their pattern(s) of learning. I agree with Conley in that teachers need good assessment information to see patterns in students' performance and to make decisions about students' literacy; content knowledge and ways of showing; communication styles; and motivation knowledge and skill in content area literacy. They also need it to create materials for students to become more literate, increasingly knowledgeable in a content area, and ultimately successful learners.

  1. I also think that teachers need good assessment information to see if students are progressing. True/false, multiple choice, and matching assessments are okay, but they do not always measure understanding. These are all forms of assessments in which students can guess upon the right answer. If they sit close enough to another student, they can also copy. Teachers need to incorporate more short answer and critical thinking questions to measure students' understandings and to see if they can apply what they have learned.

  2. I agree. Good assessments are needed to measure students' progress. They allow teachers to determine what their students know and how to adapt their curriculum to teach what they do not know. Teachers need to create assessments using a variety of methods. Assessments should be ongoing and varied in difficulty. Tests should not only measure students' ability, but they should also require students to think at a higher level. Teachers should take a great deal of time to prepare assessments that fit the needs of all students, while providing the necessary feedback on students' learning.
